Happy Earth Day!
Let’s learn about how plants absorb not only water, but many other things that mix in with water. This experiment is a great way to start conversations about the Scientific Method as well as how pollution or gardening can change the health of the environment around us.
Color-changing Flowers Experiment
Supplies:
4-6 white carnations or roses
One 8oz. cup per flower - could be glass or disposable(clear would be best but is optional)
Liquid food coloring(one box- multiple colors)
Method:
Trim the stem of each flower so that it fits well in the cup without tipping it over.
Fill each cup with water up to about halfway(4 oz).
Set aside one cup of water and place a flower in it. This will be the control.
For the remaining cups, add a different color of dye for each(or combine colors to create more colors). Use about 15-20 drops of dye.
Add a flower to each cup with colored water.
Take pictures or notes about what the flowers look like at the beginning of the experiment. Ask children what they think will happen.
Leave the flowers in the water overnight. See if they have changed the next day and take pictures or notes! You can leave the flowers in as long as you like to see if more time changes the results!
We hope you enjoy this experiment and that it creates fun times for families.
